In Luweero District, a major crackdown on absenteeism has led to the dismissal of 36 teachers from various primary schools.
The affected schools include Mityebiri Roman Catholic, St Theresa Kasaala Girls, Luweero Boys, Nandere, Buyuki, Malungu, and Nambi UMEA Primary School, as well as others such as Balita Lwogi, Matembe, Kabuye, St Peter’s Semyungu, Lukomera C/U, and Anoonya Orthodox P/S.
This move was taken after the Luweero District Service Commission ordered 41 teachers to appear before it and defend themselves against allegations of abandonment of their duty and work to teach pupils. The teachers had reportedly been absent from work for over three months without permission from their supervisors, which is against public standing orders. Shockingly, only five teachers appeared before the commission to defend themselves, leading to the dismissal of the 36 who did not show up.
In a bid to tackle absenteeism, the district has introduced several measures, including daily registration and the installation of a clock-in equipment at both schools and health centers, and smartphones in schools to capture data on absentee staff.
