Residents of Kabale District are grappling with shock and unanswered questions following the sudden death of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer, Sergeant Tumwesigye Robert, whose body was discovered in his home after he had been missing for several days.
Sergeant Tumwesigye, who was attached to the 2nd Division and deployed as an intelligence officer at Mukokye Border in Maziba Sub-county, was found lifeless on his bed in the early morning hours. His absence had gone unnoticed for nearly five days, raising concern among colleagues and local leaders.
The matter came to light when the area chairperson, Christopher Nkaneziyo, reported the situation to police after noticing the prolonged disappearance of the officer. Authorities from Maziba Police Station responded swiftly, visiting the scene to document evidence before transferring the body to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police in the Kigezi region have since launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. According to the regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate, the cause of death remains unknown.
“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of UPDF personnel Sgt. Tumwesigye Robert, whose lifeless body was discovered on his bed at his residence in Mukokye. He had reportedly been missing for about five days,” ASP Maate stated.
He added that the scene had been thoroughly examined and all necessary procedures followed, with the postmortem expected to provide crucial insights.
The quiet border community of Mukokye has been left unsettled by the incident, as residents struggle to comprehend how a serving intelligence officer could go missing unnoticed for days, only to be found dead in his own home.
Police have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue. Meanwhile, colleagues and locals alike await answers that may shed light on the final days of the fallen officer.
