The Senior Presidential Advisor on Regional Cooperation Dr. Philemon Mateke, has called on government to urgently intervene in the persistent flooding that continues to disrupt learning and destroy property across parts of the district.
Dr. Mateke, who is also the National Resistance Movement-NRM Chairman Kisoro district made the appeal on Sunday during an impromptu visit to Chibumba Primary School, which has been submerged following heavy rains.
“We cannot continue to remain silent while government pupils are suffering,” he said, emphasizing the need for immediate and coordinated action to address the crisis.
He also urged the Uganda Red Cross Society and the Office of the Prime Minister to swiftly assess the situation in the most affected communities, including Koga and Butoke villages in Kagezi Parish, Kanaba Sub- County, as well as Mpundu village in Chahafi Town Council.
To find a lasting solution, Dr. Mateke revealed plans to convene a team of district officials, including the District Engineer, the Resident District Commissioner, and the District Police Commander, to jointly assess the situation at Chibumba Primary School and design long-term flood mitigation measures. The flooding has not only disrupted education but also destroyed crops, worsening the livelihoods of residents.
