CONFRONTING THE SPIRIT OF JEZEBEL: BREAKING CHAINS OF CONTROL IN MARRIAGE AND LEADERSHIP, an opinion by Dr. Gad Rugaju

PREAMBLE

Dr. Gad Rugaju observes with deep concern that Uganda today is plagued by a hidden crisis. Many bishops, pastors, professors, and public leaders are being ruled from their bedrooms. These men cannot make a single decision without first consulting their wives — even after a management team has lawfully resolved a matter.

The resolution is tabled, discussed, and agreed upon by professionals. Yet by evening, it is overturned by a wife who never sat in the meeting, does not understand the technical issues, and has no accountability for the outcome. The bishop begins to live in fear — not fear of God, but fear of his wife. He fears her silence, her anger, and her accusations. As a result, he betrays his team, reverses godly counsel, and surrenders his God-given headship.

Brethren, this is not leadership. This is manipulation. This is the spirit of Jezebel. Today, I expose it by Scripture so that men may be restored to courage, and women may be restored to honor.

REVELATION 2:20-23

“Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”

  1. INTRODUCTION: THE SPIRIT BEHIND THE CRISIS

Today, we unmask a cunning and destructive spirit that has infiltrated pulpits, boardrooms, and bedrooms the spirit of Jezebel. This is not about gender. It is about influence. It is a demonic assignment to control, manipulate, intimidate, and ultimately destroy God-ordained authority in the home, church, and nation.

Named after Queen Jezebel of the Old Testament, this spirit manifests as rebellion against divine order. It undermines true spiritual leadership, creates division, and corrupts what God intended to be pure and holy. It preys on a man’s fear and a woman’s insecurity, turning marriage from a covenant into a battlefield.

  1. THE ORIGIN: WHO WAS JEZEBEL? – 1 KINGS 16:31-33

Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians. She married Ahab, king of Israel, and immediately introduced Baal worship, turning the nation from Yahweh.

Her name, Iyzebel in Hebrew, means “unhusbanded” or “without cohabitation.” It signifies a refusal to submit to covenant authority — whether to her husband or to God. She became the prototype of rebellion, manipulation, and spiritual seduction that we confront today in Uganda.

III. TRAITS OF THE JEZEBEL SPIRIT IN MARRIAGES TODAY

This spirit operates in both women and men, but its assignment is clear: reverse God’s order.

From the Old Testament:

  1. Idolatry and False Worship – 1 Kings 16:31-33

Jezebel replaced Yahweh with Baal.

Today: A wife becomes her husband’s idol. His peace depends on her mood. The pastor fears his wife more than he fears God. Ministry decisions bow to bedroom politics.

  1. Manipulation and Control – 1 Kings 21:7-10

Jezebel forged letters and used false witnesses to steal Naboth’s vineyard for Ahab.

Today: She uses tears, silence, sex, or accusations to veto her husband’s leadership. “If you love me, you won’t sign that transfer.” The man surrenders to keep peace, and the church suffers.

  1. Hatred of True Authority – 1 Kings 18:4

Jezebel slaughtered God’s prophets and promoted 450 false prophets of Baal.

Today: She attacks elders, deacons, or staff who correct her husband. Anyone who tells the bishop “No” becomes her enemy.

  1. Seduction and Intimidation – 2 Kings 9:22; 1 Kings 19:1-3

Jezebel used witchcraft and seduction. She also sent threats that made Elijah run.

Today: She threatens divorce, exposure, or withdrawal of conjugal rights to paralyze her husband’s decisions. Strong men become boys at home.

From the New Testament – Revelation 2:20-23

  1. False Teaching and Seduction

She called herself a prophetess and taught compromise.

Today: She tells her husband, “God spoke to me. Don’t post that teacher.” She overturns prayer and fasting with human sentiment.

  1. Rebellion and Unrepentance

Christ gave her time to repent, but she refused.

Today: She will not apologize. She will not submit. She demands to lead.

  1. Spiritual Corruption

Her influence produced spiritual adultery in the church.

Today: Homes and churches led by Jezebel lose holiness, produce division, and raise rebellious children.

  1. BIBLICAL RESPONSE: HOW TO BREAK THIS SPIRIT

When this spirit operates in your marriage, it is not a personality clash. It is spiritual warfare. Here is the biblical path to freedom:

  1. Seek Discernment First – James 1:5

Pray before you act. Separate the spirit from your spouse. Your wife is not Jezebel; she is being influenced by it.

  1. Walk in Love, Not Reaction – Ephesians 6:12

Our battle is not with flesh and blood. Do not return manipulation with anger. Return it with Christ-like firmness.

  1. Set Godly Boundaries – Matthew 5:37

Let your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No” be “No.” Tell her: “I love you, but I will not reverse this decision made by the board. I am accountable to God.”

  1. Speak Truth in Love – Ephesians 4:15

Confront the behavior, not the person. “When you threaten to leave if I don’t cancel the staff meeting, I feel controlled. That dishonors God and hurts us.”

  1. Engage in Spiritual Warfare – Matthew 18:18

Pray: “In Jesus’ Name, I bind the spirit of Jezebel. I break its control over my home. I release the Spirit of Elijah — courage, order, and the fear of God.”

  1. Lead by Example – Galatians 5:22-23

Jezebel thrives where men are passive. Walk in the fruit of the Spirit. Be loving but unshakable. Be gentle but immovable on principle.

  1. Stand Firm Despite Resistance – 1 Peter 5:8-9

She will push back. She will accuse. She will cry. Stand firm. Ahab fell because he tolerated Jezebel. Elijah prevailed because he confronted her.

  1. Intercede for Her Deliverance – 2 Timothy 2:25-26

She is captive. Pray for her repentance and healing. Many women become controlling due to past wounds, fear, or insecurity.

  1. Trust God With the Outcome – Romans 12:19

You cannot change her. Only God can. Your duty is to obey God, lead your home, and leave vengeance to Him.

APPLICATION FOR UGANDAN LIFE TODAY

1. In Church: A bishop who cannot lead his home is disqualified from leading God’s church. 1 Timothy 3:5. If your wife chairs the elders’ meeting from the bedroom, you are not the bishop she is. Repent and reclaim your pulpit.

2. In Government: A DRDC who overturns lawful security decisions because “my wife will be upset” has betrayed the President and the people. Uganda cannot be run by fear of women.

3.In Business: CEOs who reverse staff dismissals because their wives befriended the employee will collapse the company. You cannot build with one hand and tear down with another.

  1. In Homes: When fathers abdicate, children grow rebellious. When mothers usurp, daughters learn manipulation. The nation bleeds because homes are out of order.

CONCLUSION: A DOUBLE WARNING

  1. To Wives Who Refuse to Submit – Ephesians 5:22-24

Sister, when you control, manipulate, and usurp your husband’s God-given role, you are not helping him — you are housing the spirit of Jezebel. Scripture says, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.”

Submission is not slavery. It is strength under control. Sarah called Abraham “master” and became the mother of nations. Jezebel called Ahab a fool and died eaten by dogs.

Your rebellion will destroy your husband, ruin your children, and invite God’s judgment on your house. Revelation 2:23 says, “I will strike her children dead.” Your manipulation today is miscarriage for your lineage tomorrow.

Repent. Release your husband. Let him lead. Your honor is in helping him, not ruling him. A queen is not one who wears the crown, but one who makes the king secure on his throne.

  1. To Husbands Who Are Misled by Fear – 1 Kings 21:25

Brother, “There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil… urged on by Jezebel his wife.” When you fear your wife more than you fear God, you have sold your birthright.

You were called to be the priest of your home. Instead, you are a puppet. You overturn boards, cancel transfers, and sabotage programs because she cried last night. You are Ahab. And your children will pay.

The church in Thyatira was rebuked not for having Jezebel, but for tolerating her. Revelation 2:20. Your silence is consent. Your fear is partnership.

Rise up. Elijah stood alone against Jezebel and 450 prophets. You are not alone. Christ is with you. Take back your headship. Lead your family. Speak truth in your church. Sign that document. Fire that corrupt staff. God did not give you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

FINAL DECREE:

The spirit of Jezebel is judged. From today, let every godly woman choose Sarah over Jezebel. Let every godly man choose Elijah over Ahab.

For the sake of Kanungu, for the sake of Uganda, for the sake of the Church let order be restored in the home.

For God and My Country.
