Major General Timothy Sabiiti Mutebile, who is planning to run for political office in Kabale Municipality for MP seat come 2021, says he is not ready to pay even a penny to voters for support.
Maj Gen Mutebile the commander of the engineering Brigade in the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces who is planning to retire from the army says he will not pay for votes by wasting his family’s hard earned cash to voters.
He instead says the locals should contribute towards his planned election budget because of his leadership and other credentials to help him win and serve them.
“I will not buy votes I am not desperate to win an election, the people of Kabale Municipality who have asked me to stand should support me to win I hope they like me” he adds.
Speaking to journalists at Kembabazi catering centre in Naguru, Gen Mutebile says he wants to lift Kabale. He explains that he wants to works towards the restoration of the glory of Kigezi and its prosperity. According to him the current leadership has created a vacuum.
He says he is ready to unseat the Kabale Municipality Member of Parliament Andrew Baryayanga (AJA) in the race that’s now less than two years away.
Gen also states that he will not buy for locals booze. He says they have to be helped to learn to engage in productive work to fight poverty other than being bought alcohol.
Gen Mutebile says he walks in the same vein of his loved President and commander in chief Yoweri Museveni whodiscourages commercialization of politics.
Maj Gen is a junior brother to the Bank of Uganda governor Emmanuel Tumusime Mutebile but when asked what he had done for the people of Kabale/ Kigezi in general he says as the army they built a toilet at Rushoroza and constructed a garbage collection facility at Kabale Municipality market.
But voters are already asking what the influence and affluent has done to cause development in the area.
“The Mutebile family is well-off, they have not supported the local people by contributing to any project or even charity” a voter says in an interview.
“ I think the voters here if they must replace the current MP AJA they would want to send to parliament a person who identifies with their needs and maybe someone poor so that he/she can cross to another social strata, not Gen Mutebile who is okay” the voter adds.
The General was recently welcomed to Kabale where a party was made to congratulate him upon being promoted from the rank of Brigadier.
Baryayanga, who has held the seat since 2011 in the last elections trounced Prof Augustus Nuwagaba the country’s or Africa’s poverty eradication expert and Dr. Francis Runumi. Gen Mutebile plans to contest on the NRM ticket.
Baryayanga enjoys youth support for mainly engaging them in sports especially football.
