In the latest escalation of unrest in Kenya, a man was fatally shot during anti-tax protests on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Rex Kanyike Masai. Masai was rushed to Bliss Hospital along Nairobi’s Moi Avenue, where he was pronounced dead.
The Kenyan police said they have visited the scene of the shooting and have opened investigations into Masai’s death.
His mother, Gillian Munyao, said her son had been coming back from work when he was shot in the city center.
“He was evading tear gas when he was shot,” she said.
Masai’s death has compelled many Kenyans to take to social media to demand justice for the young man.
Five rights groups, including Amnesty International, said in a joint statement on Thursday that at least 200 protestors were injured and at least more than 105 were violently arrested by the Kenyan anti-riot police.
