National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) is aiming at providing safe water to 100% of the population in all villages under NWSC jurisdiction (at least 12,000 villages)
This is being implemented under what is called 100% Service Coverage Acceleration Project (SCAP 100):
The project, according to Sheba Bamwine Mukiza, the Corporation Public Relations Manager is being financed by NWSC together with the Government.
“.The project aims at ensuring universal and equitable access to safe water supply in all villages under NWSC jurisdiction by 2020” she added in a statement.
The project, whose implementation started in July 2017, is to be implemented over a period of three years (2017-2020).
She added that “the project entails accelerated installation of Public taps targeting 2 public taps per village or a tap per 200 people”
It in addition, the Project entails the following components; the installation of at least 8,000 km of new water mains, 140,000 connections and 20,000 Pubic Taps (PSPs) covering 12,000 villages.
Other components of the project include; Implementation of Water Supply Stabilization Plans (WSSPs) aimed at re-enforcing the existing water infrastructure to enhance water production to support increased water demand through; Construction of water reservoirs, booster stations and other mini projects to augment water production and supply, Rehabilitation and construction of distribution mains, Development of alternative water sources especially production wells, Intensification of the existing secondary and tertiary water networks and Land acquisition for new infrastructure.
“In the spirit of continued innovation and the need for increased productive and great efficiency, NWSC with the support of the Government will continue investing part of the Surplus from its business operations into infrastructure development projects so as to ensure adequate water supply to the growing population” Mukiza added.
The NWSC Managing Director Eng. Silver Mugisha In a telephone interview said the Corporation is implementing a number of capital-intensive projects that are strategically aimed at ensuring sustainable delivery of water and sewerage services.
“The 100% Service Coverage Acceleration Project (SCAP 100) is one of our: capital-intensive projects, and its implementation is steady, we thank government, my staff and the public for their support in striving to achieve our overall goals” Eng Mugisha added.
Enock Byakatonda a resident of Kabale town in south western Uganda said he was happy with NWSC services especially the provision of clean water.
NWSC has been scooping business awards both local and on the international scene all being in recognition of their contribution to the daily growth of Uganda’s and the world economy.
