Can Dr. Besigye’s FDC Party reclaim its support in Rukungiri?
Influential leaders of Rukungiri district have endorsed President Yoweri Museveni as the sole Presidential candidate for the 2026 elections.
Museveni, who has been in power for 36 years, has not yet indicated that he will run for 2026.
However, led by the ONC Co-coordinator Mrs. Mable Mirembe Karazarwe, leaders credited President Museveni for championing development and peace in the country and beyond.
In 2021 general elections, electorates from Rukungiri District voted NRM overwhelmingly with 70% promising to support President Museveni with 90% in 2026 general elections.
But it must be remembered that NRM snatched this win from the FDC strong hold district that is a home district for Dr. K Besigye. It is not clear whether FDC could re claim its territory.
Besigye back home like in other parts of the country is a peaceful development citizen whom am told support locals especially the needy children with fees and scholastic materials to support education in the area. For this and other reasons Besigye has been a darling of locals in Rukungiri.
Mable Mirembe said that the endorsement of President Museveni by Rukungiri leaders comes at a time when another section of leaders within the NRM has intensified efforts to front first son, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as their candidate in 2026.
Muhoozi, too, has not yet affirmed that he will stand in 2026 but he has welcomed initiatives by some young generations in the NRM to front him for the Presidency in 2026.
Costance Kamukungu a leader from Nyakishenyi Sub County revealed that they support President Museveni due to freedom and woman emancipation that is leading to the development of the communities and the country at large.
