It has been a big debate whether born again Christians should use altar wine for holy Communion? Questions that have been asked is that isn’t alter wine booze/alcohol? Why wouldn’t these Christians use simple drinks to perform that function in the holy Communion? Some mini research done in Uganda shows that altar wine is not used during holy Communion in most Pentecostal churches since it is simply considered alcohol and it is sinful and unsafe to drink alcohol. Why, drinking alcohol is against the teachings of the Bible.
While the Bible acknowledges wine as part of celebrations and even recommends it for health in some cases, it consistently warns against drunkenness, habitual overconsumption, and situations where alcohol could impair judgment or lead others into sin. Christians are encouraged to exercise wisdom, self-control, and spiritual discernment when deciding whether to consume alcohol.
Understanding the Verse
Proverbs 20:1 states: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (KJV).
Contexts Where Abstinence is Required
- Leviticus 10:9-10: Priests were commanded not to drink wine or strong drink when entering the Tent of Meeting, ensuring clear judgment in service to God.
- Nazirite Vow (Judges 13:4-5): Individuals like Samson were forbidden from consuming wine or grape products as a sign of consecration to God.
