The Virgin Birth, a sermon by Rev. Bashemeire Jastina

The doctrine of the Virgin birth of Jesus Christ  holds that  Jesus’ birth  was the result  of miraculous  conception where by  Virgin  Mary  conceived  a baby  by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Christ’s  miraculous birth tells us much about his nature.  He was born of a woman,  he became  human .

Jesus in the manger

The Virgin birth also relates to the Deity of Christ.  While it is certainly possible  for Diety to  enter the world  in a manner other than  the Virgin birth,  this miracle points  to his Divinity nature.

The announcement  of Angel Gabriel  to Mary  underscores this point  , when he told her about the having ason, Mary was  perplexed ” how can this be since am a Virgin( Luke 1:34.)

The angel’s answer is of decisive significance for our  understanding of the Virgin birth. “The Holy spirit  will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you;therefore the child to be born will be called Holy-the son of God” ( Luke 1:35).

Look at verse  37, “For nothing will be impossible  with God.

Aside from Artificial insemination,  which is  a modern, non miraculous variation on conception, nothing is more regular in nature than the normal  casual  relationship for the conception of achild. We all know this.

For awoman  to become pregnant who had not had sexual  intercourse  with aman  is not only biological  extraordinary, it is clearly against  the laws of nature.

Now, concerning  Mary’s child,  he is not generated  by Mary, herself. The father of the baby is God.

The language  used in verse 37, “the Holy spirit coming upon Mary and overshadowing her ” echoes  the work of the Holy Spirit in creation Gen 1and 2.

This Virgin  birth  is part  of the mission   of God he that  started planning  since Gen3( fall of man).

It is a manifestation of God’s love to the world (John 3:16).

The Virgin  birth full fills the scriptures Genesis 3:15, which promised that “the seed of woman” would be the victor over Satan and sin. It is expressly predicted in Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel”.

According to Matthew 1:22-23, this prophecy was fulfilled in Mary. She is called a “virgin” in Luke 1:27

This doctrine  is fundamental  in our journey  of salvation.  Because  his birth is a green light  for our redemption.

Those who don’t believe in the Virgin birth  ,usually do not believe  that Jesus is son of God.  Thus to them, this doctrine is a watershed  separating  Orthodox Christians from those  who do not believe  in resurrection and Atonement.

May Christ be born in your life.
