BUKEDEA – Tycoon Sudhir Ruparelia has donated UGX. 50 million to support the Iteso Kingdom.
The donation was announced during the closing ceremony of a three-day free eye camp held at Bukedea Teaching Hospital in Eastern Uganda.
The medical outreach, organised by the Ruparelia Foundation in memory of the Ruparelia’s late son Rajiv Ruparelia, who tragically died in a road accident in May 2025, drew thousands of patients from across Eastern Uganda suffering from various eye complications.
The camp provided free consultations, screenings, over 300 cataract surgeries (including 50 for children), and more than 1,000 pairs of reading and corrective glasses.
Speaking at the closing event on Sunday, March 29, 2026, Sudhir highlighted the initiative as a continuation of his family’s commitment to giving back to communities, reflecting the values his son cherished. The camp exceeded expectations, with reports indicating that several thousand residents turned up for treatment at the hospital in Bukedea District.
In a colourful ceremony, the Emorimor of Teso, His Royal Highness Paul Sande Emolot III, inducted Sudhir and his wife, Jyotsna Ruparelia, into the Iteso community as a mark of appreciation for their support.
Ruparelia was bestowed the Teso name Eminat Sudhir.
The induction underscored the growing bonds between the business community and cultural institutions in the region, with the paramount chief recognising the family’s philanthropic efforts in health service delivery.
Adding to the goodwill, a brand new ambulance was handed over to the people of Bukedea. The vehicle was donated by Rt Hon Annet Anita Among, Speaker of Parliament and Woman MP for Bukedea, together with the MP-elect for the area, David Beecham Okwere. The ambulance is expected to significantly improve emergency medical transportation in the district.
Local leaders and beneficiaries lauded the combined efforts, describing the eye camp and donations as timely interventions that will restore sight, save lives, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Teso sub-region.
The Ruparelia Foundation has organised similar outreach programmes in the past, focusing on underserved communities.
Sunday’s event brought together political leaders, cultural figures, medical personnel, and ordinary citizens in a show of unity and gratitude.
