The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulaigye, has said the Jinja incident that left one security operative dead, was a mistake on the side of UPDF.
Kulaigye who made the remarks while appearing on a local TV current affairs program today said some incidents have been caused by individuals officers mistakes.
He said even some few isolated cases including the one in Jinja were mistakes on the side of the UPDF.
“Some are isolated individuals, and three are mistakes on our end. The Jinja case was a mistake by our personnel, and unfortunately, one person was killed,” he said.
The UPDF spokesperson however blamed the attacks on security operatives on criminal gangs that said are continuously aiming at security officers.
“I want to assure the country that we are secure. When we look at the attacks on security posts, we can see that some criminal gangs exist,” he said, adding that, “This year has been eventful on the personnel in security. Foundation security starts with the individual in collaboration with the police. We are treating these attacks on security posts as criminality, and investigations are ongoing.”
Kulaigye also advised Ugandans to be vigilant during the festival season saying crime rates are likely to be high.
“We always encourage the population to be more vigilant during the festive season because the wrongdoers take advantage of this time, they think people are relaxed. The way Kampala is active 24/7 is not in many cities,” he said.
